Hi, I’m Alie, a newly half Brit half German mutt living with my husband and our Hund, in a small village, in a little wooden house, in deepest Baden-Württemberg. I’m a confirmed observer, a lover of books, hot cups of tea, and learning something new. I’m also a freelance writer, editor and music tutor available for hire.
As a foreigner, expat, immigrant, Ausländer, heck just a non native German I sometimes feel a lot little different to others in my new adopted home. An outsider maybe. Or that person who gets a joke 30 seconds after everyone else has stopped laughing. That’s life though and I’m learning to deal with it with the help of my two favourite medicinal treatments, Gin and Marzipan and this is where I document the useful and (I think anyway) the interesting parts of life in another language.
I’m also The Erlangen Expat, my starting point as an expat and a valuable experience for me during my first few years in Germany. Franconia will always have a little piece of my heart and if you are moving there or planning on visiting you can pick up some useful pointers here.

Great blog. I’m enjoying reading it.
Thanks, I’m delving into yours currently.
I hope it doesn’t send you sleepy. 🙂
I try to write about a mixture of topics, serious and more light-hearted.
Mach’s gut!
